What does the implementation of an ecodesign approach bring?

Orange has defined a global ecodesign approach for his products and services based on best practices & standards. Implementation of this ecodesign approach from the beginning of the Program made it possible to engage all stakeholders and contributors towards a common objective of reducing the environmental impact, and thereby reducing the customers’ Scope 3. Ecodesign awareness is part of the training package for the Program’s contributors.

Actions were identified and prioritized considering the contribution in terms of environmental impact and interest for customers:

  • The integration of software ecodesign recommendations for all components developed for Evolution Platform, Front-End and Back-End. These recommendations for Orange Group were achieved by development and ecodesign experts. They aim to limit the environmental footprint of software developments: for example, with the use of micro-services, auto-scaling, right-sizing, no duplication of data or log optimization. French general repository for ecodesign of digital services recommendations (RGESN) is also considered (see référentiel général d'écoconception de services numériques (RGESN) webpage).
  • Considering the environmental impact when choosing the architecture and design of the platform and the composition of services: for example, with the chaining of a security service with a cloud connectivity service. The act of carrying out an environmental impact measurement could enable to identify actions to reduce this impact, and to measure and display the gains obtained over time to our customers.
  • SuperPoPs circular economy and Life Cycle Analysis implementation. Through the « Orange Sustainable & Circular Ambition for Recertification » (OSCAR) program, which aims to buy refurbished equipment, organize the re-use of decommissioned equipment between subsidiaries or external resale to offer a second or even a third life to equipment. And by promoting the extension of the lifetime of infrastructure.
  • Provision of a catalogue of modular and composable "à la carte" services, with a single or pre-assembled selection to best fit the needs of the customer with an approach of efficiency and sobriety. This approach can bring savings in terms of budget, hosting, in particular with operating costs. It can also improve Service Level Agreements (SLA) by inviting to implement only the essential features and only when they are needed.
  • Partners solicitation of their Corporate Social Responsibility commitments to embark with us on more virtuous and inclusive solutions. Each Partner must answer an ESG questionnaire to assess their involvement, with for example questions such as « Is the carbon footprint of the provided software available? » or « Is the software compatible with hardware older than five years? ». This collaborative work with our Partners will optimize hosting on our infrastructure and could offer a less carbon-intensive solution than that of our competitors. Always in the interest of transparency, the « Eco maturity » indicator of our Partners will be made available to customers. This indicator provides general information on the Partner’s carbon footprint reduction ambitions, and specific information from Partner’s solution used on Evolution Platform.
